Hooked on Organics is a passion.
After finding myself needing a wheelchair in 2016, I found I needed to find a creative outlet to replace what used to be an active life. Hooked on Organics is one of the things that helps me to stay mentally active and passionately in touch with that inner creative spark; but it is a hobby not a full time business.
Each item is hand made by me with love in a smoke free environment. I use GOTS Certified Organic Cotton because I want to help to protect the earth, protect the animals, and protect my customers from the harsh chemicals otherwise used in the processing of yarns. Saying that, there is one section that uses ethically sourced 100% Alpaca Wool.
Normally I don’t use wool as I want to offer products that are vegan. However, I know where this wool has come from, I have met the Alpacas and I have known the owner for several years. The Alpacas were bought as pets, they were not bought to be part of a vast breeding project for money. The Alpacas have enjoyed freedom of movement being in large fields, they have been grass fed and treated more like family than anything else. They needed clipping, so rather than all the wool being wasted it has been morally, ethically and professionally cleaned and spun but not dyed; I believe sometimes we have to draw a line between veganism and wastage!
I was fortunate enough to get hold of some of this beautiful wool, so this is a limited edition – when it has gone it has gone. In this section, I am using mostly GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and the Alpaca Wool together to give it an ultra soft feel which is not harsh or itchy on the skin, the organic cotton also gives it more body; the blending of both yarns offers unique items of exceptional quality.
I Aim When Possible to Use Supplies that Meet the Following Requirements:
- GOTS Certified Organic Yarn (I only purchase yarn that has the GOTS Certified Symbol on it)
- Fairtrade and
Supplies such as buttons, ribbons etc can’t always meet all of the above five requirements.
We hear a lot about fairtrade and addressing the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. Fairtrade enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives, but that is often related to farmers etc in poorer countries.
I also need a fairtrade for my work, I am a skilled artisan, much of my work takes hours, it is a specialist market. But much of what can be handmade here in the UK can also be handmade overseas for less wages, so it has become common practice to buy overseas from poorer countries where the wages are very low, import the goods and then sell those same goods at a much cheaper price, whilst many handcrafters, many artisans here in the UK are left to the side because they need a decent wage for their work.
I don’t have paid tea breaks or paid lunches, I get paid for each hour of solid work. I don’t have perks or paid holidays, I don’t get a company car, I get a modest return per hour for my work which often falls well below the national minimal wage.
Hooked on Organics is a one man band.
I crochet for myself, some things I keep for me, some things I give as gifts, and some things I sell, so I only have a small collection of artisan crafts for sale and I never have more than one in stock as I usually create one offs. If you see something you like, please buy it when you see it because I probably won’t be crocheting another one.
So……….. I welcome you to Hooked on Organics and encourage you to come back often to see what or if new items have been added.
Until then, walk in love and may you always find peace within – Kenzo
